What is your name?

My name is Nataki A. Suggs.

Where are you from?

I am from Washington D.C.

What is your profession and educational background?

I am a substitute teacher for the Prince George’s County Public School system in Maryland. I am an author and poet. I am also a high school graduate.

What is your mission?

My mission is to touch people’s lives and invoke change. I want to reach the people that feel that they are forgotten or feel as if they are misunderstood…even the ones that feel like they are a mistake. I want to remind them of God’s love for them. I also want to reach those who have dealt with things that have hindered them from moving forward.

What are your long range and short range goals and objectives?

My short term goals are to be a motivational speaker traveling around to various inner cities telling my story to help encourage people to make a change.

My long term goal is to leave a legacy for my children and their children which means instilling moral and spiritual values to help them overcome many challenges. My goal is also to be one of the people that don’t just talk about change. I want to show people how to change their mindsets, break generational curses, and free themselves from bondage.

How do you plan to accomplish your goals?

I plan to accomplish my goals by being a guest speaker at different schools, churches, business functions, women’s organizations, and secular arenas. I also plan to get the word out through the publication of my work.

What do you see yourself doing five years from now? Ten years from now?

In five years, I see myself speaking around the country in various places. I see myself as a new face on talk shows and speaking on platforms designed for people who need healing in mind, body and spirit.

In ten years, I can see myself establishing organizations that bring awareness to autism, help to families that care for relatives with special needs, mentorship to homes that suffer from
domestic violence, and camps for kids who have been victims of abuse.

How do you determine or evaluate success?

I evaluate my success by the lives that I touch not by the amount of books that I sell. I know that this evaluation process is not easily measured so I trust that since I’m doing what God told me to do then I have no choice but to be successful.

What inspires you?

God is where I receive my inspiration. His presence in my life is why I write. His love is why what flows from my pen can touch so many people.

What is your opinion of the world today?

I feel that this world is dying. People don’t care for each other like they used to. We have adapted the “everyone-for-himself” attitude and neglect to look out for each other. For example, I was in a situation where my child who suffers from autism was
severely injured in a parking lot by a vehicle and people just watched and some just kept walking by. No one offered assistance nor did anyone call the ambulance even though one was needed. Although my son is okay, it was really a wake up call for me. Why don’t we willingly help each other anymore?

When I look at the youth, I feel like society has corrupted their minds giving them a deluded idea of what it means to live life and be happy. In their minds, image is of high importance yet integrity, character and spirituality hold little to no value. This is why my heart
beats for our youth. Some of them are lost and have no one who truly cares for their souls. They’re just living life without thinking of the consequences. The problem is that they have no true role models or people that are willing to tell them the truth in love and
guide them in the right direction.

What is your contribution to society?

I use my writing to invoke change in hurting people’s lives. I take time to talk to young people at the local high school in my area to show them that someone is there to listen to them.

What is your idea of happiness?

Happiness to me is being in a manifested rest where you feel free to be yourself.

Are you doing what you really want to do in life?

Yes, my passion has always been in the arts and writing gives me the outlet I need to be creative and touch lives.

What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

Greatest Strength – I can relate to people from all walks of life especially those who have been deemed as outcasts to society especially troubled teens, people who have dealt substance abuse, etc.

Greatest Weaknesses – Tolerating people who aren’t loyal and true to their word.

How would a good friend describe you?

A good friend would describe me as someone who’s not afraid to tell the truth. I’m very transparent when it comes to my good friends. I try my best to be honest with them which helps our relationship to be eternal and not temporary.

Are religious or spiritual beliefs a vital part of your life?

I will refrain from using the word religious. I believe and trust God and I know that He is the most essential part of my life and without Him there’d be no me.

Is there anything else that you would like readers to know about you?

I feel that success is measured by accepting truth about yourself which leads to change which ultimately leads to true freedom of mind, body and spirit.

Brokenness, Excerpt from A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain

I had to get broken down to understand that God is the One
that needs to have complete control over my life. My brokenness
happened through hardship, that is why in the poem I say, “Being
broken is no joke” because you do not become broken by mere
words. You become broken through many difficulties, trials,
and tests. As some people go through these hardships, either
they become further separated from God or they become more
dependent on God and begin to draw closer to Him. Those who
draw closer to Him, begin to realize that He is. They realize that
He is the mender of every mistake, heartache, and bad choice.
They get the understanding that He is the One who can ultimately
bring some clarity to everything they went through in their lives,
whether good or bad.

The brokenness that inspired me to write this poem had me
to a point where all I could say was, “Yes, God! I believe that
You are there. I believe that You are who You say You are. I
believe that You have the power to make me whole as a person.
You have the power to change my mindset so that I won’t define
myself according to my past experiences.” This same brokenness
caused me to become humble in my entire being. It was definitely
a journey. It is still my daily journey to become humble before

Brokeness

God and know that I am not here because of my own strength.
He is there and He is the One that knows me better than I know
myself.

Being broken is no joke

Being broken brings humility
Which is the only road to deliverance

From this flesh which is a total mess…

Being broken takes you to a place

Where you can’t escape
The potter’s hand

That will put the pieces back together again.

Brokenness drove a woman to touch the hem of the
Savior’s garment

Don’t misunderstand
I’m not talking about the money that’s not in your hand…
I’m speaking of being broken before the Father,


The One that you should follow

He’s the potter and we are the clay,

He desires to put us back together
Day by day, He will take you to a place
Where you can escape the mistakes that we make
everyday…

Brokeness

Brokenness produces a new you,

A person who longs to love the Lord
As much as He loves you
A vessel, a servant,
Oh yes being used by the Master of our souls
The only One who can make you whole


And fill every void you have not told

Brokenness will cause you to depend on the One
Who sent His only begotten son…

The Last Shall Be First,Excerpt from A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain

God promises that the last shall be first, but, as one continues

to be looked over, this promise becomes harder to believe. It is

almost as if you wear a sign on your forehead that says, “Don’t
pick me first!” You may even become wayward in your thinking
and believe that you are not worth being first, which gives way
to you settling for second-rate things. You may also begin to

become envious or jealous of others because they always seem
to get ahead while your situation never seems to change.

The feeling of being last caused me to dream. I dreamt of
having things go my way for a change. I dreamt of being picked
first. I even dreamt of being a writer. However, I did not really
think that I could achieve any of those dreams, so procrastination
and slothfulness became my running partners. Finally I realized
that the dreams I had were not just mere dreams, they were
indicators of my desire to be first, blessed, happy, whole, and
content.

I wanted a real relationship with God. Stumbling upon a
scripture that confirmed these desires caused me to write it down
in poetry. I also wrote this poem to encourage others who have
always felt that they were in second place, or in the shadow of
a sibling, cousin, or even the last choice in a group of friends. I


The Last Shall Be First

wanted each person to know that last is not always a bad place

because it can be said that some ‘save the best for last.’

“But many who [now] are first will be last [then], and many
who [now] are last will be first [then]” (Matthew 19:30 AMP).

You may feel forgotten
You may even feel that it’s too late to escape
From being in second place
But rest assure roles will reverse

And you will be first in line

Delayed but not denied

The chance to advance in this life

Because of the many fights

And the blows that never seem to go


But I will say one day…
This will go away
Just believe, know, have faith in God and the last will be


first

Stay strong; hold on,
The storms will pass you by
And then you will be blessed to see why you made it
through life’s tests

God will straighten the crooked places that you have been
facing
Then you will receive your divine destiny…
These tests of your faith

The Last Shall Be First

Will keep you holding on day by day
He sees all, knows all,
And is the One who will open the door

I know it hurts...

But God promised in His Word that the last shall be first.

A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain was inspired by my wanting to encourage everyone that has had something to cripple, devastate, or alter his or her life. I wanted to remind people that pain is not a respecter of persons. It is something that we all experience. No one is exempt. Pain will always find its way into your life, whether it be something as small as a paper cut or as big as a migraine headache. My story is meant to aid in the initiation of your healing because I am a survivor of pain and I know that pain can be eliminated, once you know its root. Pain’s weakness is knowledge. Once you know and recognize pain, you can begin to counteract its effects with hope, healing, or the longing to be healed. Once your emotions begin to line up with living, then pain has no choice but to wither away. This is why it is necessary to believe, say, and know that you can and shall live and not die.

A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain is targeted to any person who has been through something that has been crippling them from moving forward because of something that was painful in their lives, whether it’s the past or present. I want them to know that they are not alone and that through the healing power of the Love of God they can overcome the pain. Also, I want to stress the fact that people who have been in an abusive situations especially women and teenagers. In addition, I want to target parents who have children with autism, the pain and trauma they go through, I can relate I want to bring a message of healing to them on how so many wonderful things can happen to them when having a child going through that.

I know your pain. I know your struggle.

Having a child with special needs can be hard
at times to believe
God is the one who can fulfill their true destiny

It’s hard at times to comprehend why society judges them
But I stand to see how the Creator who made all men
Can do great things with them…
And they can make it like all men

The stares and the whispers in the stores, malls and
even in some homes
The special ones are God’s creation and yes they
are truly blessed

So I say to you it’s only a test, a test of your faith
Hold on and you will begin to see why they are here
The purpose the Almighty destined for them to be…
They are fearfully and wonderfully made
So take it day by day and remember to keep the faith

God’s Gift

Patience, love and kindness can be developed with a child

Who has certain challenges…
Begin to embrace what you continue to face
You will win in the end, especially if you show love to them

I am a poet, author, wife and mother of two. I was born and raised in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.

A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain was published by Xpress Yourself Publishing in June 2007 and consists of 80 pages. The cover and Interior Designed by The Writer’s Assistant.

A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain was dedicated to every teenager who feels that they are forgotten, misunderstood or mistake. A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain is filled with stories and poems based on my personal experiences and journeys.

What inspired you to write your book?
Inspired by my personal experiences presented in life

Do you have a specific target audience for your book?
My target audience is any person who has been through something that has been crippling them from moving forward because of something that was painful in their lives, whether it’s the past or present. I want them to know that they are not alone and that through the healing power of the Love of God they can overcome the pain. Also, I want to stress the fact that people who have been in an abusive situations especially women and teenagers.

In addition, I want to target parents who have children with autism, the pain and trauma they go through, I can relate I want to bring a message of healing to them on how so many wonderful things can happen to them when having a child going through that.

How long have you been writing poetry?
I have been poetry since my early childhood.

My poetry cries out to those who feel as if they are alone in their struggles and attempts to give them feelings of hope and freedom.

How did you come up with your title?
The reason why I picked the title was to make clear that you can live life beyond the pain of your past and even your present, you can be victorious in spite of what you have endured. You can be whole in mind body and spirit through expecting that a relationship with God is the key to being healed from the inside out.

What are your future goals?
My future goals are to be a motivational speaker for inner city at risk youth, also teens who have been victims of incest and domestic violence, women and teens who suffer with eating disorders and low self images and teen suicide.

God’s Gift

I dedicate this poem to anyone who deals with or has dealt
with a relative who has or had special needs. You are not alone.
I know your pain. I know your struggle.


Having a child with special needs can be hard
at times to believe
God is the one who can fulfill their true destiny

It’s hard at times to comprehend why society judges them
But I stand to see how the Creator who made all men
Can do great things with them…
And they can make it like all men


The stares and the whispers in the stores, malls and
even in some homes
The special ones are God’s creation and yes they
are truly blessed

So I say to you it’s only a test, a test of your faith
Hold on and you will begin to see why they are here
The purpose the Almighty destined for them to be…
They are fearfully and wonderfully made
So take it day by day and remember to keep the faith

God’s Gift

Patience, love and kindness can be developed with a child

Who has certain challenges…
Begin to embrace what you continue to face
You will win in the end, especially if you show love to them

A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain was dedicated to every teenager “who feels that they are forgotten, misunderstood or mistake,” says Nataki. A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain is filled with stories and poems based on Nataki’s personal experiences and journeys. I believe that Nataki did an excellent job in presenting her message. Both her stories and poems were very thought provoking, emotional and heart warming.

I like the way that her book, A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain was broken up into a story and poem to make it even more interesting for the reader. It was a very easy read. I think that anyone who has experienced what Nataki has experienced will relate very much to what has been underlined within the contents of her book, A Life Beyond Limits: Overcoming Private Pain. Congratulations Nataki on overcoming your pain, at the end of every journey or struggle, we all get back up again! Nataki, indeed represents the very same depiction and theory.

About Nataki Suggs

Nataki Suggs is a poet, author, wife and mother of two. Born and raised in the metropolitan Washington, DC area, Suggs began writing at a young age. By the age of eleven, she had already won first place in a poetry writing contest. When the prime of adolescence hit Suggs’ life, some experiences halted her knack for writing. However overcoming these same trials caused her to remember and rebirth her passion for writing.

Over the years, Suggs has used her writing as a therapeutic expression. Her poetry cries out to those who feel as if they are alone in their struggles and attempts to give them feelings of hope and freedom. Although she doesn’t hold a formal degree, she believes that overcoming trials are her greatest achievements. Through her works, it is her goal to invoke change in people’s lives.

In her spare time, she reads motivational books. She also finds time to volunteer for Hospice. Since another one of her passions is youth, she is currently a substitute teacher at Laurel High School of Prince George’s County, Maryland. In the midst of everything in her life, she always gives credence to the Lord Jesus Christ because without Him, she knows that she wouldn’t have a story to tell, a poem to write, or a life to live.
